RWE wins up-to-2GW Gulf of Mexico lease area

RWE has won the right to develop an area in the Gulf of Mexico with potential for up to 2GW of offshore wind capacity.

The German utility was the only winner in the seabed leasing process in the Gulf of Mexico. It has agreed to pay $5.6m to develop the Lake Charles site, which is located 44 miles off the coast of US state Louisiana.

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management led the process today and failed to attract bids for the other two sites.
