TransAlta acquires stake in 320MW Canadian storage project

The enduring appeal of pumped hydro storage has been demonstrated by TransAlta’s acquisition of a 50 per cent interest in the Tent Mountain Renewable Energy Complex, an early-stage 320 MW pumped hydro energy storage development project, located in southwest Alberta, Canada.

TransAlta, which also has battery storage systems in its portfolio, views the Tent Mountain project, which is currently owned by Montem Resources, as a proven technology that is non-emitting and has a significantly larger capacity and duration than other currently available storage options.

TransAlta and Montem will form a partnership and jointly manage the project, with TransAlta acting as project developer. The acquisition includes the land rights, fixed assets and intellectual property associated with the project.
