Reviewing the Future of Financing European Wind

9:10 – 9:40

Fireside chat

With various forecasts highlighting that throughout the year supply chain costs expect to remain high, obtaining limited onshore permits continue to be challenging, and offshore tenders are showing increasing volume of interest. However, there is no shortage of finance.

In this chat we’ll look into the external factors affecting the financing of wind currently and in the future. In addition, we’ll review:

  • The appetite to invest in the European Wind market
  • What does the future of financing European Wind look like? And, in a post subsidising world?

Moderator:

Speakers:

  • Caroline Lytton, MD – Head of Power & Renewables, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC)
  • Fabio Borba, Managing Director, EMEA Execution, GE Energy Financial Services

The European Onshore Wind Renaissance: Is 2022 a new dawn in continental Europe?

9:40 – 10:20

Panel

In this discussion, we will look at why the prospects for onshore wind in continental Europe are looking brighter than they have for many years. There is a new German government with big ambitions for onshore wind; increased confidence in Spain and France; and, across the Channel, we see onshore wind returning to UK support mechanisms for the first time.

Some areas that will be covered include:

  • Are we entering a new boom period for onshore wind in Europe?
  • What does the risk appetite look like?
  • Predictive vs. actual returns?
  • Are countries doing enough to speed up permitting?

Moderator:

  • Georg Hoefler, Head of Renewables Transactions, Allianz Capital Partners

Panellists:

A Piece of the Auction: Who’s winning the offshore arms race?

11:15 – 23:55

Panel

The last couple of years in European offshore wind have been characterised by huge and very competitive auction processes, but what does this mean for the health of offshore wind?

In this session, we consider the results of recent tenders (including ScotWind, Thor and others), and what they say about the health of offshore wind. We’ll review current and planned investments, development pipelines, and skills development. And, we will look at the emerging offshore markets that firms are fighting to be part of; and consider how companies throughout the supply chain can win in such a competitive world.

Moderator:

  • Dr Carolyn Heeps, Head of Offshore Development Project Development, Fred. Olsen Seawind

Panellists:

European Floating Offshore Wind: Realising bankable commercial scale

Wind-to-Hydrogen: How close are we to utility-scale solutions?

14:00 – 14:40

Panel

Moderator:

Speakers:

Wind’s Cost Squeeze: How will it affect you in 2022?

14:30 – 14:50

Interview

Turbine makers are forecasting a tough 2022. As well as ongoing disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, they are also warning of the impact of rising raw material and transport costs on their already squeezed profits. How tough are turbine makers finding life right now? How can they negotiate these challenges? Which will be the winners and losers?

We look at the state of play for manufacturers today and what impact this will have on project owners.

How a non-utility generator is achieving sustainable growth ambitions year on year

14:40 – 14:55

Moving to Merchant: What companies need to know about selling wind power

15:35 – 16:15

Panel

Merchant investment emerged for the first time as a major factor in the renewables market in 2021. In this session, the panellists will explore:

  • Is the rapid increase in merchant investment set to remain a factor for the long-term or will it fade as the power-price spikes in today’s world adjust down?
  • Is merchant investment driving asset values higher in M&A deals compared to the “classic” model of PPA-backed structures?

In addition, as new forms of merchant debt are now being offered by institutional lenders, dispensing with the need for long-term PPAs, will they complement or cannibalise the lending banks that still rely on PPAs?

Panellists:
