Financing Wind Europe 2018

About this event

Too busy to go to trade shows? Financing Wind is different.

It offers a concise run-down of 2018’s biggest trends and challenges, plus opportunities to connect with a varied but select range of contacts.

We’ll be debating topics such as investment activity in the European market; what the boom in Scandinavian PPAs could teach the rest of Europe; how companies can respond to the growth in offshore; and technology trends such as hybrid projects, floating turbines and more.

Agenda

Registration and Executive Breakfast

8:00 - 9:15

Organiser’s Welcome

9:15 - 9:25

  • Adam Barber, Managing Director, The Tamarindo Group

The Value of Data Access Restrictions for Wind Investors

9:25 - 9:40

Wind farm owners are facing a big problem with operations and maintenance. They are spending a huge share of their budgets on unplanned repairs. Many want to use predictive analytics to better understand the performance of their wind farms and boost returns, but they often can’t take advantage of this technology because of restrictions on their access to wind turbine performance data. Bruce Hall explains more about the problem and its solutions, including why such restrictions may be illegal under EU law.

  • Bruce Hall, CEO, Onyx InSight

The Wall of Money: Key Investment Trends In European Wind

9:45 - 10:30

Leaders’ Panel

There is a wealth of investors putting their money into the wind sector in Europe, and governments are putting in place targets to increase the proportion of renewables in their energy mix. We are joined by a panel of top thinkers to discuss topics related to key questions for those investing in wind, such as:

  • Which types of investors are most active in the European market?
  • Is there too much investment capital chasing too little supply?
  • How are competitive auctions changing the landscape?
  • What are the challenges as corporate PPAs become more prevalent?
  • How do strategies need to change in an era of subsidy-free projects?
  • Should we be concerned about the impact of Brexit on wind deals?

Panellists:

  • Lindsay McQuade, CEO, Scottish Power Renewables
  • Michael Hannibal, Partner, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners
  • Mike O’Neill, CEO, Element PowerScott Mackenzie, CEO, Ventient Energy
  • Prajeev Rasiah, Executive VP and Regional Manager, DNV GL (Moderator)

Networking Tea Break

10:30 - 11:15

Viking Roar: What Can Europe Learn From Scandinavia’s Wind PPA Boom?

11:15 - 11:45

Fireside Chat

Corporate power purchase agreements have been big news in the US and Australia, but less of a feature in the European market – so far. The notable exception is Scandinavia, where a series of large corporate PPAs have been signed in the last year. We hear from Justin FitzHugh about how the market works and how it could expand into the rest of Europe. This is likely to be a key structure for wind firms as subsidy support wanes.

Interviewee:

  • Justin FitzHugh, Partner, Augusta & Co

Interviewer:

  • Paul Stormoen, Managing Director, OX2 Wind

Now and Next: How Should European Firms Approach The Offshore Market?

11:45 - 12:30

Leaders’ Panel

The UK and Germany have retained the top two spots in the offshore wind market globally – but for how long? In this session, we will look at how companies in Europe should respond to the major changes in the European market and further afield; and where they should focus to maximise their growth through the 2020s. We are joined by a panel of top thinkers, who will discuss topics such as:

  • How long can the UK hold onto its crown as the largest offshore market?
  • Which countries in Europe and further afield should firms be focused on?
  • Which kinds of investors are most active in offshore wind? Will this change?
  • Will zero-subsidy projects become prevalent? What does this mean for companies?
  • How are project deal structures evolving and what does that mean for the market?
  • How can changes in turbines and other technology take offshore wind mainstream?
  • How long will it take to commercialise floating foundations?

Panellists:

  • Duncan Berry, CEO, LM Wind Power
  • Nathalie Oosterlinck, CEO, Otary RS
  • Philippe Kavafyan, CEO, MHI Vestas
  • Stephen Bull, SVP Wind and Low Carbon Solutions, Equinor
  • Felix Fischer, Partner, Chatham Partners (Moderator)

Networking Lunch

Technology Trends: Floating Wind and Other Technological Changes

1:45 - 2:15

Fireside Chat

The evolution of wind turbines and other technology has underpinned the growth of wind and its moves into new countries. In this session, Principle Power’s João Metelo talks about floating technology and how this could open up swathes of the ocean for wind farms. He and Limejump’s Erik Nygard will also discuss key trends such as the growing potential of storage, the evolution of the transmission grid, and how technology can help owners better forecast project returns.

  • João Metelo, CEO, Principle Power

Interviewer:

  • Erik Nygard, CEO and Co-Founder, Limejump

Established vs Emerging: Balancing Opportunities in a Global Market

2:15 - 3:00

Leaders’ Panel

Institutional investors, manufacturers and utilities from Europe are always looking for new opportunities in the global market. But, with the wind sector entering ever-more exotic markets, what balance should European investors look to have in their portfolios? And are there any truly unexplored markets? We are joined by a panel of top thinkers,
who discuss topics such as:

  • Which are the most exciting emerging markets for wind investors?
  • What split do companies want between established and new markets?
  • How do investors need to structure deals in these new markets?
  • Will established or emerging markets be the main drivers of wind growth?
  • How important is it for companies to be able to work in both wind and solar?
  • What potential does repowering offer to investors in established markets?

Panellists:

  • Dana R. Younger, Chief Renewable Energy Specialist, IFC
  • Carol Gould, Head of Renewables, MUFG
  • Marc Groves-Raines, Managing Director, Allianz Capital Partners
  • Dr Carolyn Heeps, Head of Renewables for North America, Lloyd’s Register
  • Dominik Thumfart, Managing Director, Deutsche Bank (Moderator)
